Our Eternal Search For Fulfillment - Why I Chose To Become A Copywriter.

An open letter to anyone who has ever had the courage to dream BIG.

From the desk of a high school dropout:
In the middle of nowhere.

(WARNING: This will probably won't make any sense as I'm writing this as I'm on early morning caffeine rush)

To whom it may concern:

We all have dreams that we believe are out of reach...Desires, fantasies and goals bigger than life. You may want that big house in the suburbs, how about a beach house in Malibu for the weekend?, A vacation home in the Caribbean Islands sound good? Or maybe you're the kind of person who wants to travel 6 months a year?

You wanna have a nice meaningful life and the perfect person to share it with. You want everything divine this world has to offer. Do you remember that passion?...that glimmer in your eyes, the hope that one day you will be all you can be and nothing in this world can stop you?

Then what stops you from getting there? what slows you down? whats holding you back? whats keeping you from going out there and living your dream?

YOU.
We all tend to lose sight of our goals and our dreams. You get comfortable working that 9-5 job, paying your bills, paying taxes, raising a family, doing everything everyone tells you to do. You follow what society labels as "the norm".
Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with having a "9-5 job" as long as you're passionate about it.

You don't have to like it every single day but you have to be able to find some satisfaction, A certain sense of purpose and happiness in whatever you're doing. You see, majority of the people I know are stuck in dead-end jobs that they don't derive any pleasure from.

Then why do you even do it...day in and day out? You're miserable anyway. Instead, Save up & make time to pursue the one thing that makes you happy, Something you've always wanted to do. It wont be easy and It might not happen overnight, might take weeks or maybe months or a year or two years. But eventually you will get there.

Someone very wise once told me:

"You fail when you decide to give up, You gotta know that where you are is temporary. If you give up, You're gonna stay there and remain there for the rest of your life. You gotta be persistent, you gotta HOLD ON and follow through. You can rest and rejoice once you reach the promised land. But now is not the time, Its time to WORK HARD. It is time to work hard and get where you wanna get to. So stop messing around and get your @$$ off that couch and start workin' towards making something of yourself coz no one else is going to do it for you."

These words changed my life and are responsible for how far I've come today, as a friend, a writer and as a human being in general. I don't have impeccable grammar and nor do I have good punctuation. But I realized that I had an ability to CONNECT with people. I had the ability to inspire and help people. I just needed to find the words to get my message out there.

And after getting a couple of my posts published on my old blog...I realized something amazing, people will excuse your not-so-perfect writing skills as long as you get your message out there in a way that others can understand. I realized that no one cares if you have a masters in English literature or if you write like some literary genius on steroids. As long as you're clear about what you want to convey and who you want to convey it to and strike a chord with your audience.. You're Golden. You just need to have faith in your abilities.

We all have passions, we all have dreams. The difference between those who make it and those who get stuck is persistence and consistent hard-work. You have immense power within yourself to not only dream big but also to pursue what you desire and make it come true. Success will always follow hard-work.

So I encourage you... NO... I DARE you to not be weak and just give up and stick with what you're doing. I had a weak moment and dropped out of high-school. I walked out of my class in the 10th grade and never went back. I wasn't strong enough, I gave up and I suffered the consequences. I hurt and lost a lot of people around me.
I've been made fun of and even insulted by my own friends and at times it wasn't uncommon for me to curl up and break down. I couldn't make myself go back to school, I couldn't bear it.

But I knew this wasn't the end of it, I knew that I had potential. I knew that if I worked hard and honed a particular set of skills, I could make something of myself. I've always loved to write controversial threads/posts that got attention and It felt good when people responded to what I wrote and how I could connect with them with my words.

I worked as a freelance ghostwriter and managed a couple of blogs and updated them regularly. I knew I had a knack for writing. One day, one of my clients asked me if I could write copy for his MMO (Make Money Online) product. I was hesitant but I took up the job anyway. I wasn't very confident about my writing abilities but I was confident about my experience in sales. I had a background in telemarketing and door-to-door selling.

I showed him my first draft a week into the project and once we both came to an agreement on certain things, I went on to finish the project (which took me another week). He tested that copy and it converted at 1% (I was excited beyond words because I was convinced that it would flop). I then gave him headlines/ openers and different call-to-actions to test with and before we knew it, My copy was pulling in 3%.
I had never been so excited about something, I was never this hungry for more knowledge. I had finally found something that excited and fulfilled me. Copywriting has become a very odd pleasure of mine.. every project is challenging and that's what excites me, gets me high, Its almost as if its a turn-on. I was loving each and every moment of it.

But I had many disagreements with my employer and I decided not to work with him anymore as we were just not working out. It happens, He's a nice guy but we decided its best if we remain friends and avoid get involved professionally and it has worked out well for the both of us. We still exchange emails and brainstorm together at times and I will be forever grateful to him for introducing me to the art of writing copy.

I have finally found something that Gives me a certain sense of fulfillment and to top it off freelance work is easy to find. I
have a very genuine love for writing copy and everything to do with it. I finally found my "thing".(giggles)

You need to find your "thing" too .. something that fulfill's you and makes you happy. Then chase it and don't let anything get in your way. Its not easy but its possible. Because when you get where you want to, all the pain will be more than worth it. In the end you just want to find joy in whatever you're doing.

I've stopped writing copy for now in order to read-up and learn a little bit more and will be updating my progress on this blog. I've started this blog with the intention of keeping my writing chops sharp and also to connect/interact with different people...maybe even inspire others to chase their passions and find fulfillment in their life.

Until next time,
Kunal

P.S: Do write a comment and say hi... I'd love to get to know you better.
